Some Newbie Online Music Promotion Tips

Phillip Sheppard put out an interesting article for those of you looking to get a little more involved with the whole music promotion process. The article is called “Online music promotion, and how musicians can run their own record labels”. It has some pretty decent info in it. I’ll highlight a couple of the things you need to know:

If you’re starting out, no doubt you want people to hear you, join you, and get excited about what you produce next gig. So let’s get past the part where you track and record your songs and have something for the public to download, listen to and get excited about. First place to start, well, it still seems like myspace is STILL the first step. It’s a simple, great way to redirect people to your other online avenues. So set it up, but don’t think it’ll work any miracles.

Next you want to get your own space on the web. Use wordpress blogs. Trust me, they are easy and work. The article goes on to talk about what they use for mailing lists, a great way to get some amazing artwork for your stuff (worth checking that little secret out!), and a couple of great places to take your music. I’ve looked into both Sound Cloud and The Sixety One, and vouch for both of them.

The article goes into more about setting up a label to sell some of your cds. It doesn’t go into too much detail, but It’ll point you in the right direction if you’re looking to do so.
Definitely some decent sites and tools for people looking for online band promotion. It’s still not everything you need to know, see link above for that, but it’s some good stuff worth a look…
