In the world we are living in today there are thousands of different songs out there and each of them has different lyrics. Some lyrics are about love, some are about peace and there are some out there that talk about war and hatred of this world. No matter what the lyrics may be, they each are unique and have qualities of their own. However, some people agree that there has been a huge change in the style of lyrics over the past few years. When my mother’s generation was young, the lyrics of the songs were about good times and bad times, patriotism and family gatherings but my mother mentions that lyrics nowadays are about war, death, and violence. I agree with her. She is around 45 years of age and back when she was a teenager, music was a whole world different then it is these days. The industry resembles very little of its older counterparts as well. However, over the past few years, it seems that lyrics have become more and more violent. Some teenagers nowadays just enjoy this kind of music and who are we to judge? When our parents generations started becoming fond of the Beetles and Elvis, they had to hear the same harsh judgments and looking back today, none of us really believe Elvis to be the worst influence in history now.
The people who don’t understand today’s music and who are not used to it are definitely the older generations though. During the times of our elders, country music was very famous and the lyrics back then would be about home, family and love for country. I asked one of the older gentleman that I knew in my apartment his thoughts about today’s music. He mentioned that he is so scared about the lyrics of today’s music. He also mentioned that over the past few years, he observed that the lyrics have become more and more honest but
violent. I totally agree with him. However, this seems to concrete the fact that music is a product of its own time, every time. Moreover, every time I hear him listening to music, it is always be about love, family and country. The lyrics sounds so peaceful and when I first listened to it, I had really never heard anything like it. He told me before I walked away that it was natural for older generations to dislike the music of the younger, that it was almost expected. As I laughed he also said “I’ll bet even the kids in the year 1301 didn’t like the music from the 1280′s. And I bet you anything he was right!
