Online music promotion seems to be the way to go these days, to be heard and recognized by the public. However, many talented solo musicians and music bands do everything to promote themselves, yet somehow fall short of the mark. Granted, there are best practices that one needs to follow. There are also, ways of optimizing on even the best practices to ensure that you are heard, seen, and known by the people.
It all starts with the first step that most musicians take; music blogging. Music blogs are flooded with tons of email everyday; aspiring singers, bands, show bands, and so on. If you don’t get noticed, all your efforts go waste.
What you need is a strategy that will drastically improve the response rate to your online music promotion tactics. Here are some pointers:
First, upload your music on to a streaming site: Use YouTube and Vimeo to post your music videos and Bandcamp and Soundcloud to upload audio files.
Identify your blog site targets: Some sites look for fresh talent while some are more interested in remixes; customize your email accordingly.
Email your music to blog sites: Your email’s subject line should be to the point, the greeting crisp and the body no more than a line or two. This should be immediately followed by a link to your music.
Attach an MP3 of your track: Music blogs usually distribute new songs to their readers. Make sure you send the MP3 out only to the bigger blog sites who can give you the coverage you need. Yes, you’ll have to let go of a track or two in your online music promotion endeavors; perhaps your lead single?
Attach a picture of your band: A nice jpeg or gif picture that says something about your band, of say 600-750 pixels.
Important: Do not include links to purchase your music. When you’re promoting a track, forget the money and focus on making your listener happy.
