These concepts were taken from an interview with Tom Silverman. There are roughly 120,000 albums that come out every year. How do you break through the noise if you’re on a limited budget? Tom Silverman talks about how to differentiate yourself in every one of the four important aspects that define an artist:
- the songs – self explanatory.
- the recording – one funny thing about sound, no one notices it when it’s good, but it stands out like crazy when it’s bad. You don’t have to break the bank making it great, but make sure your recording doesn’t suck (if you’re wondering if it sucks, it probably does). Also helps to be creative with your sound. Everyone has used the same instruments as you at some point, so what are you doing to make it interesting? How are you separating yourself from the pack?
- the image & concept – Concept is another way of saying “what do you stand for?” Susan Boyle sold more albums in 6 weeks then anyone else did in 3 years because of this. I’m not saying you need to distort yourself to the point of being entertaining (although this has worked in the part). It’s just that stories spread like wild fires. That translates to a different kind of interest. The kind people usually want to be a part of.
- the live show – Tom has some great things to say about the live show. Check them out here…
