Interview with Tom Silverman

by Nate Richards

I always enjoy reading interviews with intelligent people in the record industry. Here’s one with Tom Silverman of Tommy Boy Entertainment. He speaks his mind on the current digital age of music.

It’s 3 parts. Part 2 is the one I think is the most interesting. He tells about getting popular today, and how to break through the sea of obscure artists. Also mentions the 5 best ways to differentiate yourself, which I will make another post about soon.

Arguably the biggest point he makes is even in this world of digital music sales and websites, one of the most sure fire ways to make it is by busting your ass playing gigs. Turns out you still need to put in the work to make it to the big leagues. Sure there are the one in ten million that makes it via myspace or youtube, but you have almost the same odds of getting big through american idol. Use today’s technologies to support your gigs, and then you are truly embracing the digital music age.
